UNION GROVE CEMETERY, HARSHAW •Saturday, May 25 – Annual Veterans Day ceremony 11:30 a.m., 4521 Lakewood Rd., Harshaw, at the Veterans Monument in Union Grove Cemetery. Past Veterans and Military will be honored. All are welcome. For the ceremony itself, bring a chair. A free luncheon will be held at the Cassian Town Hall following the ceremony. Ingman Jr. Veterans Memorial Motorcycle Honor Procession” will leave American Legion Post 93, 327 W. Refreshments will be served prior to the event in the cafeteria. The Tomahawk Area Veterans Honor Guard will advance/recover the Colors and the program will involve K-4 school students in music and song. The public is invited. Placement of flags: Tomahawk Honor Guard placed flags in the flag holders of veterans’ graves at St. Augustine, Oak Hill, Greenwood, Calvary, Somo, Union Congregational and Prairie Rapids cemeteries May 18 and will remove them a week later. Relatives and friends of veterans who are buried in these cemeteries are asked to determine whether or not a veteran’s grave is marked with a flag. If a grave is not marked, they are asked to stop at the Lincoln County Veterans Service Office, 801 N. Sales St., Room 146, Merrill, during normal business hours to pick up a flag. Sales St., Merrill, at 11 a.m. The Merrill City Band will start playing at 10:30 a.m. The event is sponsored by VFW Post 1638 and Auxiliary, and is open to the public. Veterans Post and Boy/Girl Scouts are asked to arrive by 10 a.m. for a walkthrough and coordination. Point of contact is John Rathke, VFW Post 1638 commander, 715-218-0440. Placement of flags: Volunteers from the area are placing Memorial Day flags at the graves of veterans on record with the Lincoln County Veterans Service Office. This takes place approximately one week before and then they will be removed approximately one week after Memorial Day, May 27, 2019. Unfortunately, there is difficulty in locating some of the graves. Relatives and friends of veterans buried in local cemeteries are asked to determine whether or not the graves are marked with a flag and flag holder. RHINELANDER CEREMONY •Monday May 27 – Memorial Day ceremony at 11 a.m. in the John and Dori Brown Performing Arts Center (formerly the Rhinelander High School auditorium), 665 Coolidge Ave., Rhinelander. Guest speaker will be Rep. Rob Swearingen, and the master of ceremonies will be local attorney and Navy veteran, Brian Bennett. The schedule includes: Post of Colors by the VFW Honor Guard; “The Star Spangled Banner,” performed by Rhinelander High School Show Choir; Pledge of Allegiance; invocation by Pastor Ken White; “Eternal Father,” performed by RHS band; opening remarks by Brian Bennett; remarks by Rhinelander Mayor Chris Frederickson and Oneida County Board Chair Dave Hintz; guest speaker – Rep.
